Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bar 1, Cm7), Eb (bar 2, Eb), Ab (bar 3, Abmaj7), G (bar 4, G7), C (bar 5, Cm7), Eb (bar 6, Eb), Ab (bar 7, Abmaj7), G (bar 8, G7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Eb over Cm7, G over Eb, C over Abmaj7, B over G7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C Minor Pentatonic in position
