Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F (bar 1, Fm7), Ab (bar 2, Ab), Db (bar 3, Dbmaj7), C (bar 4, C7), F (bar 5, Fm7), Ab (bar 6, Ab), Db (bar 7, Dbmaj7), C (bar 8, C7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Ab over Fm7, C over Ab, F over Dbmaj7, E over C7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F Minor Pentatonic in position
