Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bar 1, E), A (bar 2, A), B (bar 3, B), A (bar 4, A), E (bar 5, E), A (bar 6, A), B (bar 7, B), A (bar 8, A), E (bar 9, E), C# (bar 10, C#m7), and so on through the form. Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G# over E, C# over A, D# over B, E over C#m7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. E Major Pentatonic in position

Play E Major Pentatonic (E F# G# B C#) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 112 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
