Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in A Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: A (bar 1, Am), C (bar 2, C), D (bar 3, Dm), E (bar 4, E). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: C over Am, E over C, F over Dm, G# over E. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. A Minor Pentatonic in position

Play A Minor Pentatonic (A C D E G) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 118 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.
