Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Minor

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bar 1, Em), G (bar 2, G), A (bar 3, Am), B (bar 4, B). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G over Em, B over G, C over Am, D# over B. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. E Minor Pentatonic in position

Play E Minor Pentatonic (E G A B D) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 118 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
