Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: B (bars 1–3, B6), B (bar 4, B7), E (bars 5–6, E6), B (bars 7–8, B6), F# (bar 9, F#7), E (bar 10, E6), B (bar 11, B6), F# (bar 12, F#7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: D# over B6, D# over B7, G# over E6, A# over F#7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. B Major Scale in position

Play B Major Scale (B C# D# E F# G# A#) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 180 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
