Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in B Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: B (bars 1–2, Bm6), E (bar 3, Em7), B (bars 4–5, Bm6), F# (bar 6, F#7b9), E (bar 7, Em7), B (bar 8, Bm6), C# (bar 9, C#m7b5), F# (bar 10, F#7b9), B (bar 11, Bm6), F# (bar 12, F#7b9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to B.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: D over Bm6, G over Em7, A# over F#7b9, E over C#m7b5. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. B Harmonic Minor in position

Play B Harmonic Minor (B C# D E F# G A#) up and down in frets 6–10, one note per beat at 165 BPM. Start and finish on B: 6th string fret 7, or 5th string fret 2 for the next position up.
