Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in Eb Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: Eb (bars 1–3, Eb6), Eb (bar 4, Eb7), Ab (bars 5–6, Ab6), Eb (bars 7–8, Eb6), Bb (bar 9, Bb7), Ab (bar 10, Ab6), Eb (bar 11, Eb6), Bb (bar 12, Bb7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to Eb.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G over Eb6, G over Eb7, C over Ab6, D over Bb7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. Eb Major Scale in position

Play Eb Major Scale (Eb F G Ab Bb C D) up and down in frets 10–14, one note per beat at 180 BPM. Start and finish on Eb: 6th string fret 11, or 5th string fret 6 for the next position up.
