Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F# Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F# (bars 1–3, F#6), F# (bar 4, F#7), B (bars 5–6, B6), F# (bars 7–8, F#6), C# (bar 9, C#7), B (bar 10, B6), F# (bar 11, F#6), C# (bar 12, C#7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A# over F#6, A# over F#7, D# over B6, E# over C#7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F# Major Scale in position

Play F# Major Scale (F# G# A# B C# D# E#) up and down in frets 1–5, one note per beat at 180 BPM. Start and finish on F#: 6th string fret 2, or 5th string fret 9 for the next position up.
