Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in F# Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: F# (bars 1–2, F#m6), B (bar 3, Bm7), F# (bars 4–5, F#m6), C# (bar 6, C#7b9), B (bar 7, Bm7), F# (bar 8, F#m6), G# (bar 9, G#m7b5), C# (bar 10, C#7b9), F# (bar 11, F#m6), C# (bar 12, C#7b9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to F#.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: A over F#m6, D over Bm7, E# over C#7b9, B over G#m7b5. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. F# Harmonic Minor in position

Play F# Harmonic Minor (F# G# A B C# D E#) up and down in frets 1–5, one note per beat at 165 BPM. Start and finish on F#: 6th string fret 2, or 5th string fret 9 for the next position up.
