Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bar 1, Gmaj7), E (bar 2, Em7), C (bar 3, Cmaj7), D (bar 4, D7), G (bar 5, Gmaj7), E (bar 6, Em7), C (bar 7, Cmaj7), D (bar 8, D7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: B over Gmaj7, G over Em7, E over Cmaj7, F# over D7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Mixolydian in position

Play G Mixolydian (G A B C D E F) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 126 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
