Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Major

Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bars 1–2, G9), C (bar 3, C9), G (bar 4, G9), D (bar 5, D9), C (bar 5, beat 3, C9), G (bars 6–7, G9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: B over G9, E over C9, F# over D9. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Mixolydian in position

Play G Mixolydian (G A B C D E F) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 108 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
