Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in A Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: A (bars 1–2, Am6), D (bar 3, Dm7), A (bars 4–5, Am6), E (bar 6, E7b9), D (bar 7, Dm7), A (bar 8, Am6), B (bar 9, Bm7b5), E (bar 10, E7b9), A (bar 11, Am6), E (bar 12, E7b9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to A.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: C over Am6, F over Dm7, G# over E7b9, D over Bm7b5. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. A Harmonic Minor in position

Play A Harmonic Minor (A B C D E F G#) up and down in frets 4–8, one note per beat at 165 BPM. Start and finish on A: 6th string fret 5, or 5th string fret 0 for the next position up.
