Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in C Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: C (bars 1–2, Cm6), F (bar 3, Fm7), C (bars 4–5, Cm6), G (bar 6, G7b9), F (bar 7, Fm7), C (bar 8, Cm6), D (bar 9, Dm7b5), G (bar 10, G7b9), C (bar 11, Cm6), G (bar 12, G7b9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to C.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Eb over Cm6, Ab over Fm7, B over G7b9, F over Dm7b5. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. C Harmonic Minor in position

Play C Harmonic Minor (C D Eb F G Ab B) up and down in frets 7–11, one note per beat at 165 BPM. Start and finish on C: 6th string fret 8, or 5th string fret 3 for the next position up.
