Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bars 1–2, Em6), A (bar 3, Am7), E (bars 4–5, Em6), B (bar 6, B7b9), A (bar 7, Am7), E (bar 8, Em6), F# (bar 9, F#m7b5), B (bar 10, B7b9), E (bar 11, Em6), B (bar 12, B7b9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G over Em6, C over Am7, D# over B7b9, A over F#m7b5. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. E Harmonic Minor in position

Play E Harmonic Minor (E F# G A B C D#) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 165 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
