Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in G Minor

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: G (bars 1–2, Gm6), C (bar 3, Cm7), G (bars 4–5, Gm6), D (bar 6, D7b9), C (bar 7, Cm7), G (bar 8, Gm6), A (bar 9, Am7b5), D (bar 10, D7b9), G (bar 11, Gm6), D (bar 12, D7b9). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to G.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: Bb over Gm6, Eb over Cm7, F# over D7b9, C over Am7b5. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. G Harmonic Minor in position

Play G Harmonic Minor (G A Bb C D Eb F#) up and down in frets 2–6, one note per beat at 165 BPM. Start and finish on G: 6th string fret 3, or 5th string fret 10 for the next position up.
