Practice drills

  1. 1. Find the changes in E Major

    Play only the root on the first beat of each change: E (bars 1–3, E6), E (bar 4, E7), A (bars 5–6, A6), E (bars 7–8, E6), B (bar 9, B7), A (bar 10, A6), E (bar 11, E6), B (bar 12, B7). Keep counting through every bar that holds the same chord; the form resolves back to E.

  2. 2. Target the guide tones

When each chord arrives, land on its third and hold it for a beat: G# over E6, G# over E7, C# over A6, D# over B7. Then repeat with the seventh (see the table) to hear how the line leads into the next chord.

  3. 3. E Major Scale in position

Play E Major Scale (E F# G# A B C# D#) up and down in open position (frets 0–4), one note per beat at 180 BPM. Start and finish on E: 6th string fret 0, or 5th string fret 7 for the next position up.
